Getting Around Bratislava: Transport Guide for First-Time Visitors

Bratislava's public transport system is simple, cheap, and more than adequate for getting around the city. Most visitors make it more complicated than it needs to be. Here is what you actually need to know.

The basics

The city runs on trams and buses operated by Dopravný podnik Bratislava (DPB). No metro. The network covers the entire city and runs frequently during the day; less so late at night.

Trams are the most useful for tourists — lines 1, 3, and 4 cover the main corridors between the Old Town, the train station, and the wider city.

Tickets

• Single journey: ~1 € (15 minutes, no transfers)
• Transfer ticket: ~1.20 € (60 minutes, valid for transfers)
• 24-hour ticket: ~3.50 € — worth it if you are making more than 3–4 trips in a day
• 72-hour ticket: ~7 € — good for a multi-day stay

Tickets can be bought from yellow ticket machines at major stops, at newsstands (trafika), or via the IDS BK mobile app. Validate your ticket when you board — inspectors do check, and fines for no ticket are around 50–70 €.

Taxis and ride-sharing

Official taxis exist but the best option is the Bolt app — reliable, shows the price before you book, and significantly cheaper than flagging down a street taxi. For airport runs, Bolt or pre-booked transfers are the safest choice.

Walking

The Old Town is compact and entirely walkable. From Schöndorf Hostel on Obchodná, most of the main sights are reachable in 10–20 minutes on foot. For anywhere further — Devín, Kamzík, the zoo — use public transport.

Airport connections

Bus 61 connects Bratislava Airport (BTS) to the main bus/train station in about 30 minutes for a standard bus fare. Worth knowing for arrivals and departures.
