Welcome to Bratislava: A Backpacker's First Day Guide

Arriving in Bratislava

Whether you're stepping off a bus from Vienna (just an hour away!) or arriving by train, Bratislava greets you with a mix of old-world charm and youthful energy that's hard to resist.

Getting to the Old Town

From the main bus or train station, the Old Town is just a short tram ride or a pleasant 15-minute walk away. If you're staying at Schoendorf Hostel on Obchodna Street, you're right in the heart of the action.

Quick transport tips:

  • Trams & buses run frequently and cost around €0.70 for a 15-minute ticket
  • Walking is the best way to explore — the city center is very compact
  • Bolt (ride-hailing app) is available and affordable

Must-See on Day One

Bratislava Castle

Head up to the castle hill for panoramic views of the Danube, the Old Town, and even Austria on a clear day. The grounds are free to explore and perfect for photos.

Michael's Gate

The only preserved gate of the medieval fortifications. Walk through the narrow streets around it and soak in the atmosphere.

Main Square (Hlavne namestie)

The beating heart of the Old Town. Grab a coffee at one of the terraces and watch the world go by. Don't miss the quirky Cumil statue — the man peeking out of a manhole!

Where to Eat on a Budget

  • Slovak Pub — Huge portions of traditional food at backpacker-friendly prices
  • Flagship — Local craft beer and great burgers
  • Street food along Obchodna — kebabs, pizza slices, and more for under €5

Evening Plans

Bratislava's nightlife punches above its weight. The area around Obchodna and the Old Town is packed with bars. Start with a drink at KC Dunaj (rooftop bar with views) or Bukowski Bar for cocktails.

Pro Tips

  1. Free walking tours leave from the Main Square daily — a great way to orient yourself
  2. Tap water is safe to drink everywhere
  3. Shops close early on Sundays, so stock up on Saturday
  4. ATMs are everywhere, but avoid the ones branded "Euronet" — they charge high fees

Bratislava is one of Europe's most underrated capitals. Give it a chance and it'll surprise you. See you at the hostel!
